Estonia’s largest sea and family festival Tallinn Maritime Days 2022 unveiled its program today. The festival that will be held on 25-28 August features free concerts, diverse sea-themed entertainment and food offered in four Tallinn ports: Old Passenger Harbour, Seaplane Harbour, Noblessner Marina and Haven Kakumäe Marina.
Introducing the festival’s program, Kaarel Oja, Deputy Mayor of Tallinn in charge of culture, said: “The idea behind organizing Maritime Days was to open Tallinn to the sea. A lot of work has been done over the years to show Tallinn as a coastal city and a port town. But this expansion of Tallinn to the sea is only beginning. For Tallinn to be called a maritime city we need more small ports, yachting schools, maritime transport and leisure services at sea, including fishing and diving. This will be the biggest focus of the Maritime Days for the coming years.”
Kristjan Saar, head of the organizing team of Tallinn Maritime Days, says that the festival will be the largest to be held this summer in the capital of Estonia and is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors from both near and afar. Held for the 14th time, Estonia’s largest sea and family festival will this year be extended by one day and starts already on Thursday, August 25 with the international Baltic Sea day program in the Noblessner Marina, focusing on the diversity and values of our common sea.
The festive opening concert of Maritime Days will this time be held on Friday, August 26, in the Seaplane Harbour, next to one of Estonia’s most special museums Estonian Maritime Museum that this year celebrates its 10th anniversary in this location. Among others, Hanna-Liina Võsa, Ivo Linna and Tallinn Police Orchestra will perform a concert dedicated to long-forgotten film music. There will be numerous concerts and different sea-themed and family activities also in all other participating ports.
At the sunset on Saturday, August 27, traditional ancient lights will be lit on Baltic Sea coasts and this tradition is proudly upheld also in Tallinn Maritime Days. “At the time when everything around us is becoming more expensive, visitors undoubtedly will welcome the fact that the city of Tallinn will charge no fee for attending the festival and its excellent program," said Saar.
The list of ships visiting Tallinn for the festival includes Polish sailboat Baltic Beauty, Finnish sailboat Alexandra and oil spill response vessel M/S Saukko, as well as Estonian sailboats Hiiu Ingel, Moonland, Lisette, Bellinghausen. The traditional Sea Taxi, one of the most popular attractions of the Maritime Days, will be shuttling between the participating ports, harbours and marinas. As a new attraction, one can take a ride on the Bay of Tallinn with one of Estonia’s fastest water vehicles, hovercraft, travelling at speeds of up to 90 km/h. Maritime Days will end with the symbolic Maritime Parade on Sunday, August 28, which all vessels are invited to attend.
Registration for merchandise and food stall for the festival is open until July 25. Everyone who is interesting in catering or trading will find more detailed contacts on the website of Tallinn Maritime Days. In addition, the festival is inviting 50 to 70 people who are at least 16 years of age to volunteer and help us carry out exciting and educational tasks that are key to ensure the smooth running of the festival. Volunteers must submit an application by August 5 and fill out a questionnaire available at: https://bit.ly/merepidu
