Tallinn Maritime Days to kick off tomorrow featuring exciting activities on land and sea

Tallinn Maritime Days that this year will start on August 25 is offering performances from top artists and exciting activities for children. Visitors can also take sea rides with a large number of watercraft in the ports and marinas participating in the festival.

“The programme of Tallinn Maritime Days has never been so extensive, offering entertainment for large and small visitors, as well as varied and practical knowledge on what to do in case of an emergency on sea to recipes for delicious fried herring,” said Kristjan Saar, head of the organizing team of Tallinn Maritime Days.

As usual, the festival has attracted a large number of different watercraft that take festival visitors to shorter or longer rides from different harbours and marinas.

“This year's flagship visitor is the two-mast sailboat “Baltic Beauty” flying the Polish flag. Also many of the prominent Estonian historical ships such as Moonland, Hiiu Ingel and Lisette are present. A sea taxi shuttles between the Seaplane Harbour and the cruise terminal of the Old City Harbour. For the first time in the history of the Maritime Days, also hovercraft rides are on offer,” said Lauri Väinsalu, coordinator of maritime activities at the Tallinn Maritime Days.

Major concerts and several activities for kids held in the framework of the Maritime Days are free for everyone. According to the organizing team, due to the overall price growth, a lot of effort has been made to ensure a top-quality programme without asking entrance fare from the visitors.

"In addition to the fact that Tallinn Maritime Days is one of the most popular sea-themed and family festivals in Estonia, there is another important aspect: namely, events like this have made it possible to open the Tallinn waterfront more to the public and re-discover Tallinn as a maritime city. But the Maritime Days serve also other goals since in addition to our on-shore activities, we have a truly spectacular programme also on the sea," said Kaarel Oja, Deputy Mayor of Tallinn.

“We have come a long way to ensure that Tallinn opens up to the sea, and now is the time to take the next step. This step will take us to the sea. We can finally say that Tallinn is a maritime city when city residents no longer go to sea only occasionally, in connection with some celebration, but for whom going to the sea is a natural part of life. Our goal is to have more ports, sailing schools, maritime transport and excursions, and why not also more fishing and diving opportunities,” said Kaarel Oja, describing the broader meaning of the festival.

The opening day of the festival, Thursday, 25 August, will be dedicated to the Baltic Sea. In Noblessner marina, the celebrations of the Baltic Sea Day will include information-sharing on the current state and the future of the Baltic Sea as well as presentation of the principles of eco-friendly fishing. During the day, the Finnish oil spill response vessel M/S Saukko will be open to public at the marina. At the Seaplane Harbour, Tanel Padar will give a concert at 5 pm.

The opening concert of the Maritime Days will take place on Friday, 26 August, at the Seaplane Harbour, where singers Hanna-Liina Võsa and Ivo Linna will perform film music with the Tallinn Police Orchestra.

Tallinn Maritime Days will be held this year on August 25 - 28 in the cruise area of the Old City Harbour, Seaplane Harbour, Noblessner Marina and Haven Kakumäe Marina.
