Tallinn Maritime Days to Open with a Grand Maritime Parade

One of the highlights of this year’s Tallinn Maritime Days (July 17-19) will be a big squadron voyage - a maritime parade of ships, to be enjoyed by all of the festival’s visitors.

The parade starts from Pirita Harbour and moves towards the Old City Harbour. Visitors can partake in the journey, seeing with their own eyes what a maritime parade is all about. The grandiose event will include more than 80 vessels, including the Swedish and Finnish sailing ships the Gerda, the Tre Kronor and the Linden and our own, Estonian sea beauty, the Kajsamoor.

“The squadron voyage is no doubt an exciting event for anyone who likes the sea and everything sea-related. We often see different parades and processions on the streets, but a sea parade is completely unique and something you can only see during the Tallinn Maritime Days,” explains Taavi Aas, Deputy Mayor of Tallinn and Head of the Tallinn Maritime Days. “As is the custom with parades, those who wish can take part in the maritime parade – either as passengers on a ship, by registering one’s vessel to participate in the parade, by watching from the shore, or by joining the Tour d’ÖÖ ride and following the parade along the land,” Aas said, adding that the event is made even more extraordinary by the fact that visitors can take part in the parade by land or by sea.

In addition to the maritime parade, there will also be a Tour d’ÖÖ bicycle ride, which means that several hundred bicyclists will join the parade by land. The boats and bicycles will all start off at Pirita Harbour and finish at the Sea Plane and Old City Harbour’s. The squadron voyage will be followed by the official opening of the Tallinn Maritime Days 2015. This will be a magnificent opera gala featuring opera stars Jassi Zahharov, Maria Listra and Oliver Kuusik, led by the well-known and beloved Martin Sildos. The musical will be performed by the Estonian National Youth Symphony Orchestra (Ü-ENSO). The opening of the Tallinn Maritime Days 2015 will finish with a fireworks and laser show on the sea.

The parade will include vessels from the Moonsund Regatta and the Estonian Historic Ship Society, joined by visiting ships from Sweden and Finland and Tallinn Maritime Days’ visitors’ vessels.

The whole program of Tallinn Maritime Days 2015 will be made public in June.
